Design Tips

Using Window Treatments to Enhance Your Space

Window treatments are an aspect of design that can be underestimated and overlooked.  I’ve learned, over the years, that window treatments, when done right, always enhance the overall look and feeling of any room.  They really are the finishing touch.

Selecting the correct window treatment for your individual windows can be daunting, so here are just a few things to consider:

1. Think about the Mood of the Room

Whether it’s a living room, bedroom or an office, each window treatment should be unique to that particular space.  If you are looking to make the room feel light and airy with a sense of coziness to the space, use a lightweight fabric in color and feel.  On the other hand, if the aesthetic for the room is more classic and elegant, opt for a heavier fabric and style, which will make the room feel a touch more sophisticated. With bright sunshine and higher temperatures ahead, there is no better room to feature as the room of the month, than this covered outdoor patio! The perfect gathering space for friends and families that is functional, yet beautifully designed with bright pops of color and pattern.

2.Working with Large Windows

Oversized windows have become a huge (no pun intended) trend over the last several years.  And while we love the extra Vitamin D, they can be very tricky to dress.  In this lakeside retreat, the goal was to frame the beautiful view, have a drapery that would provide privacy and enhance the look of the overall window.  Floor to ceiling draperies were the answer and ticked all of the design boxes.

3. Choosing the Right Hardware

With a plethora of drapery rod hardware on the market, you can to from iron to wood to acrylic and way beyond.  The size of the hardwood is just as important as the material it’s made of.  Don’t go skimpy here! Select hardware that is proportionate to the window treatment and the window and will enhance the drapery it’s holding.

4. Two Story Windows

These windows may seem daunting, but honestly, two-story windows can sometimes make the biggest impact in your room design.  Every situation is different, but I do love to use floor-to-ceiling draperies than can be dramatic and will take your breath away.  Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, you can use straight panels or kick it up a notch with an oversized tie-back that will be sure to make a statement.

Five Interior Design “Rules” That are Meant to be Broken

For anyone new to the interior design world, it can be easy to stay loyal to the conservative “rules” of design. There’s nothing wrong with sticking with a traditional look, however, bending and even breaking rules allows you to express yourself through the decor of your home. At the end of the day, interior design is all about being able to find pieces you love and incorporate them into your home. Focus on this, and by the end of this article you will be ready to mix your brass and chrome kitchen finishes and layer prints like a pro.

1. Mixing metals. Just because you have stainless steel appliances in your kitchen, doesn’t mean you should be scared of mixing metals. There is nothing wrong with pairing chrome sink hardware with stainless steel appliances. This adds a cool modern vibe and can take your kitchen to the next level.

2. Don’t place big furniture in a small room. It may seem a little odd to place big furniture in a tiny room, but having extra small furniture in a small room won’t make your space feel larger. I suggest incorporating one or two bigger pieces like a large sofa and a large accent mirror. A large sofa is comfy and inviting while an oversized accent mirror reflects light and gives the illusion of a bigger, more open space.

3. Hang your art. This is a rule that should definitely be broken! Leaning art against a wall or layering it on a floating shelf is a great way to bring a bohemian vibe into your space! It can be very chic—you just have to trust in your vision! Take it a step further and bring in unique statues or other forms of standing art.

4. Don’t paint the ceiling. This is one tip I break in almost every project. I love painted or wallpapered ceilings because it makes any space feel bold and stylish. If you go for a print, choose one what matches the scale of the room. Since adding color or texture to the ceiling is already a bold statement, I suggest sticking to a simple color or soft pattern to keep the room from getting too busy.

5. Furniture styles should always match. Having a completely matching furniture set is a thing of the past! Forgetting this rule gives you the ultimate flexibility when buying furniture. Go ahead, mix a traditional dining table with funky, modern chairs! The key here is to make sure your furniture still has some common ground. Your furniture can all be a similar shape or you can tie them together with identical throw pillows or a beautiful table runner.

Transitioning Your Home from Summer to Fall

Summer is coming to and end, and we are all preparing to reorganize our schedules with the return of school, fall sports, our favorite lattes and cooler weather. It’s no coincidence that we want to carry that mentality into our home decor.

Fall is the perfect time of year to embrace warm colors and fun earthy textures. If you know me, you know I’m a planner, so I love to start thinking about fall as early as possible! Read on for some of my best tips on how to transition your home from summer into fall.

Color. Luckily, we have mother nature to thank for bringing so many wonderful colors and inspiration to us in the fall season. I love decorating during this time of year because it is filled with so many yellows, oranges, and reds that are guaranteed to make any space feel cozier. Using warm-toned throw pillows will instantly warm up any chair or sofa in your home. If you’re on the bold-side, try out a pair of accent chairs in a shade of red! But remember, “warm” colors aren’t the only way to get that sought after fall look! You can always dare to be different by adding bold metallics or animal prints.

Texture and Layers. Simple additions such as adding throw blankets or layered area rugs are great ways to make the transition into fall without making any drastic changes. Experimenting with texture and layers also gives you the opportunity to add warmth without totally changing your color scheme.

“Try not to go overboard with these small changes, this way you can easily remove or change out accessories until you reach a perfect balance for your home.”

Incorporate nature in your decor. Don’t be afraid to bring the outside in. Decorate with pumpkins, leaves, acorns, gourds and other natural fall elements. These type of pieces are sure to capture that autumn feeling that we’re all going for, plus they won’t break the bank.

Transition your favorite outdoor space. Don’t totally neglect your porch or patio just because summer is coming to a close! You can easily replace your summer cushions and pillows for fall. Also, keep your patio feeling extra cozy by adding a durable and long lasting throw blanket on your furniture. Lastly for all you porch-dwellers out there, there is nothing more classically fall than a gorgeous fall wreath.

LNDxKS Homegoods Fall Line Launch

On Tuesday night, I had the distinct pleasure of celebrating the Kendra Scott home goods fall line launch with a little gathering at the South Park store. I can’t tell you how honored (and giddy) I was to be chosen as Kendra’s preferred interior designer in Charlotte, and co-hosting this party was the icing on the cake!

We sipped on rosé, nibbled on delicious small bites and tried on just about every piece of jewelry in the store. I’ve always said, the process of accessorizing your home is very similar to accessorizing your outfit, so it was a treat to not only play in Kendra Scott’s beautiful pieces, but be inspired by their new home goods line as well.

Throughout the evening, we encouraged guests to drop their card in for our raffle featuring a decorative box, a necklace and a pair of earrings, all of which I had the thrill of designing. To me, this was my favorite part of the event as I was able to showcase a little bit of my taste through the already wonderful Kendra Scott pieces!! And not to mention, the little girl who won the earrings just stole my heart – trust me when I say she was absolutely adorable!

The event would not have been a success without everyone who came out, so thank you, THANK YOU to those who attended and enjoyed the evening with us! And a HUGE thank you to Kendra Scott and her Charlotte team – we look forward to many more collaborations in the future!!!

How to Blend Different Design Styles

I often have couples come to me and ask for help designing their first home as a pair. Whether you are married or just roommates, designing a cohesive space can be sticky. Lucky for you, it doesn’t have to be! Here are some of my favorite tips for making the transition into a shared space an easy one.

Asking the right questions. I firmly believe in open communication from the start. This eliminates any confrontation during the renovation or design stage.

“To avoid conflicts along the way, consider sitting down with your partner and  be sure to ask all of the right questions. What’s important to you in this space? What colors make you happy? How would you like this space to feel?”

This approach ensures that you design a space that incorporates both of your styles and everyone feels heard. The living room below was quite the unique project. The wife wanted a prefect entertaining space. Something soft, feminine, elegant and welcoming to their guests. The husband agreed, but also wanted the space to showcase to his many prestigious NFL awards, including his Heisman trophy!

Establish ground rules. Before the design work even begins, go ahead and establish some ground rules. Communicate with your partner about what elements in design that are “make or breaks.” This will make choosing the hardware, finishes and accessories much less stressful. I recently created a “hot pink” dining room for a very special client. The wife works in an emergency room and wanted something to come home to that made her happy. Pink happens to be her favorite color, she even wore it on her wedding day. I was instructed by her husband to “take everything my wife says and cut it in half and we will both be happy.” And so I did!

Unify the space. When it comes to designing a space, I typically suggest starting with a blank slate. However, there is nothing wrong with utilizing pieces that you already own. If the styles of your furniture clash, try finding decorative pieces to help blend everything together. One way to blend your styles and keep the peace in a relationship is to focus on commonalities. Keep the common areas of your home more neutral with colors and styles you both agree on, and allow your partner some creativity by incorporating their design preference in their private spaces. I had a female client who wanted a master bedroom dripping in gold, a chic retreat that was both contemporary and warm all at the same time. To please the mister, we compromised by mixing up some of the lines, angles and textures in the space. We balanced the bling of the light fixtures and fabrics with the hard angles and masculine stateliness of the large gold boxed bed, the rich and sleek bedside tables and the luxe chocolate velvet headboard!

This room is all about a statement but we needed to create one that spoke to both his and her styles! Viola!

Repetition creates style. The use of color is a great way to reduce design conflicts between couples! Research shows that many people enjoy living in a space with colors found in nature. Using neutral tones like taupe or green will satisfy one’s need for color in a space, without leaving the other feeling uncomfortable. If you have an overwhelming desire to use a color such as pink or red, incorporate it through an accent wall or with decorative pillows. This large family room is just that, a room for this large family. This room had to meet many requirements including, serving as a comfortable place for a family of 7 plus friends and two pups to relax, lounge and watch TV together. So a lot of comfortable and durable seating was in order! All of that comfortable seating had to look great, as this room is seen and used by many guests for entertaining throughout the year.

Ways to Add Texture and Warmth to Your Space

My job as an interior designer is to transform houses into homes. I love nothing more than helping my clients find unique design pieces that really bring a room together that has just felt off. Figuring out how to bring life, texture and warmth into your space can be intimidating; there are SO many options to choose from! But, I promise it’s much easier than you think. Here are a few of my favorite tips for how to spruce up your home, one room at a time.

Florals. Adding plants and flowers is one of the easiest and most cost efficient way to bring texture and color into a room. I love adding flowers to a coffee table or placing a small plant in the corner. Incorporating greenery will create a natural focal point in any space, but won’t make the room feel overcrowded. I love this tip because it really hits two birds with one stone.

“You can refresh your space with something beautiful, while supporting your local farmers by purchasing your flowers from a local farmers market!”

Pillows with character. Pillows are a simple and quick way to bring a space together with color and texture. Swapping out pillows for each season is an awesome way to continuously incorporate new colors into your design. This keeps your space fresh and gives you the flexibility to change things up a bit on a whim.

A beautiful rug. Rugs are an easy decorating piece to overlook, but they are so important for bringing a room together and providing that WOW factor! When searching, make sure to look for fun patterns or textures that will catch your eye in all the right ways. The scalloped rug pictured below is a true triple threat. The light gray matches the overall color scheme of the master bedroom, while grabbing our attention by contrasting against the dark wooden floors. This rug is also giving us not one, but two types of texture, from the physical scalloped print and from its material, which I absolutely love.

Draperies. I could talk all day about draperies if anyone would let me! Incorporating window treatments is  one of my absolute favorite ways to bring a room to life and to provide the finishing touch to any room. Wether you want simple, sheer window treatments to let in lots of natural light, or go bold by incorporating thick draperies with a fun pattern, these are something you should never overlook! Bonus tip: Hang your drapery rod as close to the ceiling as possible to make the room feel higher and to “fake” a bigger space

Three Investment Pieces Every Person Should Own

Purchasing a home is an important milestone in a person’s life. And for many of us design-lovers out there, we cant wait to make our house a home.

Designing a newly purchased home can be an expensive process. However, I’m here to tell you that you don’t always need to spend a fortune on every piece to achieve a high-end look—it’s all about balance. I love finding cost effective accessories that complement the high-end pieces.

“To achieve balance in the design and in your budget, be sure to invest more of your budget on the important pieces that will make the biggest impact.”

Invest in the larger pieces that you have an emotional connection to, as these pieces will end up being the most used items in your home. They’re also pieces that you’ll build your space around, so choose wisely! I have an old saying when it comes to buying major pieces of furniture, “buy right or buy twice.”

Here is my list of furniture pieces every homeowner should invest in.

A great sofa. The sofa is the heart and soul of any living room. It’s one of the largest pieces of furniture in a home and also the one that is frequented by family, friends, and most importantly, our furry friends. Select a classic, well built sofa that will age well. A good sofa will last you 5 years, but a great sofa will last 10+ years. Since this particular piece has such a long life expectancy, I always suggest choosing a sofa in a neutral color or soft pattern. This will allow you to constantly “redesign and update” the room without actually changing the furniture. Swapping out pillows, artwork and other accessories will keep the room fresh and modern while keeping the large pieces consistent.

A kitchen or dining room table. Do you love to entertain? Or always have guests in your home? If you answered yes to either question, then you should consider investing in a beautiful table that can withstand the constant use and abuse.

Your dream bed. Some say that your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your home. Personally, I agree with this statement. A great mattress can provide you with happiness, comfort and some support when you need it most. Splurge on a mattress and save on the accessories in your bedroom. This way you can refresh your space with new pieces when the moment strikes you. Your bedroom should be an oasis, a space that takes you far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Go ahead and invest in a dreamy bed set. You can choose a grand, dramatic set for a luxurious feel, or go for a simple, chic set that you can dress up or down!

Bonus Splurge: rugs. In fashion, the shoe makes the outfit. In design, the rug makes the room. a great rug is another piece you can design an entire room around. So I suggest choosing a staple rug that ties the elements of a room together for a polished look. Or, go wild with a great statement piece with a pop of color.

Bonus splurge: mirrors, chandeliers or artwork with character. Accessories pull together a room. Set aside at least 10% of your budget right off the top for your accessories. You won’t regret this, I promise!

Wallpapering Tips for the Adventurous Homeowner

Wallpaper is back!

Wallpaper has transformed in a number of ways. Grandma’s florals are gone and have been replaced with modern and trendy patterns, prints and textures. The technology behind wallpaper has also changed in a big way. The adhesives and techniques our installers use make it easier to put up and tear down, if you have to.

“The key to wallpaper is picking the right paper, so you never want to take it down.”

At the end of the day, the most important thing to know about wallpaper is where to put it, and what to put up. Here are some of my best wallpaper tips for our adventurous homeowners.

The right wallpaper for your home and lifestyle. You’ve taken the leap of faith, now it’s time to figure out which style is right for your home. Textured wallpaper is great option if you want the space to have a more natural look and feel. These are typically made from linen or cotton materials. Hand-screened wallpapers are for the homeowner who wants vivid colors and textures that pop off the wall. However, this is a more expensive option as each color is applied separately to the paper, instead of machine-printed. Wallpaper murals are making a comeback, and are perfect for the homeowner with a bold sense of style. The options for wallpaper murals are endless, and will transform that blank wall to a focal point in an instant.

The size of your space. Consider the size of your space when choosing the right wallpaper. Try a smaller scale print or use grass cloth to emphasize texture to keep the space from becoming overwhelming. However, a small powder room can often be the perfect spot to use a drama filled wallpaper.

Wallpaper isn’t just for walls. Look up! Ceilings are now calling for wallpaper to bring a space together. Wallpaper on the ceiling can instantly add texture and dimension to any room.

When going big and bold. This is where you can let your creativity  shine with the help of hand-screened wallpapers or the use of a good mural. Large scale print is perfect for an accent wall in a bedroom or dining room, and is sure to offer a wow-statement.

Professionals are your friends. Installing wallpaper has truly transformed into a more user friendly process. The adhesives and glues, as well as the installing methods have changed enough for homeowners to want wallpaper in their homes again. But, there is nothing wrong with receiving help from licensed professionals. Involving a professional installer is definitely the way to go. Brining in a professional designer is also important to help to decide what wallpaper to choose and where to put it, so in years following you don’t want to take it down.

Consider using wallpapers in those areas of your home where you want to add some drama and interest, not in every room of your house. Remember wallpaper is not the same as it was even 10 years ago. It goes up and comes down much easier. But, choosing the right kind will result in a beautiful, effortless looking space that will never go out of style.

Antique vs. Modern: How to Define Your Home Using Pieces from Both Genres

Do you have a modern home but can’t deny your love for vintage and antique style? I’ve got you covered. There is nothing wrong with having a love for different styles of furniture and decor—in fact, it can make for a fun and interesting space. If done correctly, mixing and matching contemporary with traditional decor can transform any room into a beautiful melting pot of styles. Here are my tips for any creative homeowner who wants to incorporate various styles in a chic and effortless way.

Finding the right pieces. I suggest starting with a blank slate. Clear out the space you want to work on in order to create a plan. Now it’s decision time. What role do you want the pieces to play in your grand plan? Will they be the focal point or a great supporting character?

Keep the largest items the most current, yet neutral. Utilize pieces that you already own to blend both styles together. If you already have a modern sofa with clean lines, use pillows, chairs or small occasional tables with vintage or antique flair to incorporate both styles.

A modern focal point adds an eye catching element to a more traditional room

Achieving balance. They key to incorporating multiple styles in any space is to achieve balance between each genre. To do this, consider the number of items you want to include and the scale of those items from each style. For example, if you have a grand antique chandelier, balance it out with a modern dining table and chair set. Maybe you also use an antique dining table that’s been in the family for generations, so go more modern on your chairs and artwork. As long as there is balance between styles and scale of styles, feel free to play with different combinations until it feels perfect.

Use repetition through a pattern or color scheme. There are several different ways to work with different styles of decor and still encompass a cohesive look. Try having a simple color scheme for the items you will be using from each style. Or, use repetition from a fabric pattern or texture as a focal points in the space to guide your eyes around the room!

Vintage can be modern! If you find yourself stuck between modern and vintage, try out a few pieces that incorporate both characteristics. Mid-century modern design is a classic look that incorporates the handmade feel of vintage, with the simple, clean lines of modern design. It’s the best of both worlds.

When blending styles, it’s all about trial and error. Finding the right pieces to fit your desired aesthetic takes time, so be patient and your space will come together perfectly.

Designing an In-Home Office: How to Boost Creativity While Maintaining Functionality

If you have the option of working from home, we are all insanely jealous. With that said, you need a space that blends together both functionality and creativity to get your work done. These are some of the most important must-haves to enhance your productivity and overall happiness!

Space. Having a designated space that you can go into and out of is essential when trying to complete work related tasks. Along with being able to shut everything out to increase concentration, this also helps to establish a separation between personal life and professional life. Make sure to decorate the room with whatever makes you happy.

“A fun accent wall can help creative juices flow, and after all, we do our best work in a space that makes us happy.”

Lighting is Key. A dark, drab space is the LAST place you will get any work done! We are all drawn to natural light, so use it to your full advantage. Choose a space with large windows and consider adding oversized french doors to maximize natural lighting. It is also important to utilize great task lighting. Incorporate a few desk and table lamps for a soft glow to get things done if you’re more of a night owl. Remember the fun wall color I mentioned earlier? If you ended up with a darker color such as navy blue or an earthy tone, it could make the space feel dark and closed in. Contrast it by using lighter furniture and metallic finishes and accents.

Adding comfy space. Everyone understands the importance of a great desk and chair. But to help break up your day, add in some comfy chairs or a chaise lounge for reading and thinking breaks. Another great option is to incorporate ottomans and benches with pops of print. If you keep the palette neutral, consider adding pop of color in your furniture. Throw down a faux-fur blanket and colorful pillows to add some fun into the space.

Declutter. Declutter. Declutter. A messy desk is an unproductive desk. Before the day begins, I make sure to organize my space to maximize functionality and productivity. But it’s all about finding what works for you. Having a lot of storage space in or around your desk will help keep clutter at bay. Another great way to add high design and functionality to your office is to add bookshelves. Go for floating shelves to keep a sleeker look, or opt for built-ins with shelving and cabinet space for extra room.

Finding Inspiration. To help boost creativity in your home office, it is extremely important to fill your space with inspiration. Why do you work? What motivates you? What are your goals and passions? These are simple questions to help figure out what to accessorize your office with. It’s easy to find inspiration in nature, artwork or interesting fabrics and patterns. Again, this is all about finding what you love and incorporating it into your space. After all, you will be spending most of your time there!

Bonus tip: Hide things you don’t want to see! I love this tip so much, that I couldn’t leave it out! If you choose a modern aesthetic, there’s no hiding computer cords, whether we like it or not. Run a power strip behind your desk and plug everything into that to hide it away. What about your office equipment? Printers often look bulky and out of place, so opt for wireless printing and hide that printer away in a cabinet or nearby closet.

How To Make Any Room Look Bigger

Who’s, ready for summer?!

Do you ever walk into your home and get the feeling that “there’s just too much going on?” Does your space feel cluttered and cramped? Fear not! I have some great tips to make any room look and feel bigger. With creative design choices you can make small changes to any room to get the most out of it. Here are some of my best tips.

Strip away unnecessary items. Reduce your clutter. Take everything out of the small room except for your major pieces of furniture that absolutely must stay. Then start adding back one piece at a time based on function first, then beauty. When you start to incorporate the decor accessories, add fewer, larger pieces to your space, rather than an abundance of smaller items. You will soon find that less is always more in a small space.

Use oversized mirrors. Mirrors in any capacity will reflect and bounce light around a room. So, lets use them to their maximum potential and give the illusion of more space! You can also use mirrored furniture, which gives you the same effect without cluttering your walls.

Use leggy furniture. The more you can use furniture with an open base to it, the better.  The space underneath allows your eye to see beyond and through the furniture pieces, making the room appear larger. Heavy, blocky furniture pieces will close off the space, making it appear much smaller. Many dressers we are seeing on the market now have a 6-inch leg which gives the appearance of a taller, more open space.

Paint is your friend. Spice up your walls—and ceiling— the smart way! Paint is one of the best ways to make a space feel lighter or brighter. Paint or wallpaper your ceiling a darker color, and it will look like your ceiling is fading away, instead of bringing the ceiling down. Additionally, contrast the dark ceiling with a lighter crown molding a nd light walls to enhance that contrast.

Keep window treatments light.  Window treatments are one of the most important finishing touches in a space, but be aware, if done wrong, they can make a room look small. Maximizing your space has everything to do with pulling the eye upward, so mount your curtains as high as you can. The bottom of the panel should hit about a 1/2-inch above your floor for the longest line possible. As for colors, keep things fresh and light.

So pick your smallest room, or the room and just feels the smallest, and give it a well deserved make-over! Once your space is clutter-free and light as a feather, it may just become your favorite space in the house.
